It also provides an overview of the current status of LIS education in Japan and examines the implications of the rapid growth of this field while noting some of its significant issues and problems. The first section of the paper is an introduction. The second section outlines the legal qualifications of librarians in Japan. The third section describes LIS education in Japan, including historical background, educational institutions, curriculum, and students. The fourth section addresses issues and problems, including development, employment of graduates, and career development. (Contains 14 references.) (MES)
