Highlights include: the impermanent nature of maps; changes in spatial information creation, storage, processing, and management resulting from developments in computer-based information technology; steps required to download the digital version of a USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) map; acquiring map material that is not in a standard distribution network; MapQuest, an Internet mapping business; and Mapnet, a tool for visualizing the Internet. The following observations are noted in conclusion: (1) maps, either paper or digital, are elusive; (2) maps are transformative; (3) libraries have well-defined roles; and (4) networked maps are innovative and unpredictable.
