contents Assessing the Nature of Learners' Science Content Understandings as a Result of Utilizing On-Line Resources. Hoffman, Joseph L. Krajcik, Joseph S. Astronomy Ecology Electronic Libraries Geology Grade 6 Information Seeking Inquiry Intermediate Grades Problem Solving Science Education Weather World Wide Web The purpose of this study was to describe the depth and accuracy of sixth grade students' content understanding as a result of engaging in information seeking activities using Web-based resources in the University of Michigan's Digital Library. Eight student pairs received scaffolded pedagogical support from classroom teachers while completing four online inquiry units (astronomy, ecology, geology, weather) during a nine month period. Emerging understandings were assessed through a content analysis of learner final products and semi-structured interviews conducted during the school year. The analysis provided insight into both the depth (recalling information, offering explanations, articulating relationships, extending explanations) and accuracy of learner understandings (inaccurate, none, partial, accurate). Results of this study provide an empirical perspective on the use of World Wide Web resources in science classrooms. (Contains 66 references.) (Author/YDS)
