  • The M.L.S. Hiring Requirement. SPEC Kit 257. Blixrud, Julia C., Comp. Academic Libraries Employment Qualifications Higher Education Librarians Library Education Library Science Library Surveys Masters Degrees Personnel Selection Promotion (Occupational) Questionnaires Research Libraries Tenure This survey of ARL (Association of Research Libraries) libraries was conducted in 1999 to determine whether findings of a 1994 survey that examined if research libraries were hiring non-M.L.S. (Master of Library Science) degreed applicants into professional positions had changed. Results revealed that, of the 111 ARL members responding, 73 libraries do require an M.L.S. or equivalent library degree for all librarian positions. This document includes survey results and selected documents addressing institutional policies and procedures for the hiring and appointment process from Brigham Young University (Utah), the University of Delaware, the University of Saskatchewan, and the University of Utah, as well as promotion and tenure criteria from Pennsylvania State University, Purdue University (Indiana), the State University of New York at Albany, Texas A&M University, the University of Utah, and Washington State University. Selected resources are listed, including 25 books and journal articles and 31 World Wide Web sites. (MES)
