contents Local Mail Posts in the United States: A Bibliography of Items in the National Postal Museum Branch of the Smithsonian Institution Libraries. Carr, Timothy, Comp. Duncan, Francis, Comp. Annotated Bibliographies Archives History Information Sources Library Collections Museums Resource Materials Special Libraries Local mail posts were private enterprises that operated mainly in cities circa 1840-1861. Locals provided services the United States Post Office Department (USPOD) did not offer. Some locals operated in association with the USPOD. In addition, some locals offered services that overlapped those offered by other independent mail carriers and express companies. Many locals issued their own stamps. Stamp collectors have conducted intensive research to identify local stamps and their origins, partly to separate genuine from faked stamps. This bibliography is presented to promote the study of locals in the National Postal Museum Branch of the Smithsonian Institution Libraries. Sources are presented under the following categories: books; journal articles; special publications; auction catalogs; stamp catalog; and indexes. (AEF)
