contents The State of Libraries in Solomon Islands in the 1990s. Dadalo, Tony Academic Libraries Developing Nations Foreign Countries Information Services Library Development Library Services Library Surveys Problems Public Libraries Questionnaires School Libraries Special Libraries The purpose of this research project was to examine the current state of libraries in the Solomon Islands with particular attention to the resources available and the services provided. Data was collected through a survey questionnaire, site visits, and informal interviews carried out in the Solomon Islands between July and August 1998. The 20 libraries that responded to the questionnaire included 1 national, 2 academic, 3 public and provincial, 4 school, and 10 special libraries. The major findings reveal problems in library and information services provision to local communities. These problems are not unique to Solomon Islands but are common to many developing countries. Library service is hampered by a general lack of library resources, a serious shortage of qualified librarians, insufficient funding, a lack of cooperation between libraries, and a lack of commitment to and recognition of libraries by responsible authorities including the Government. There is also a lack of awareness of the services provided by the libraries and of the importance of librarianship as a profession. This research concludes with discussion on the roots of the problems and ways in which these problems could be overcome to lead to improving the standard of libraries and librarianship in the Solomon Islands. Appendices include the survey questionnaire, letters to libraries, and list of participating libraries. (Author/AEF)
