- Caldecott Connections to Social Studies. Glandon, Shan Art Activities Childrens Literature Curriculum Enrichment Elementary Education Illustrations Interdisciplinary Approach Multiple Intelligences Picture Books Social Studies The Caldecott Medal is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the U.S. artist of the most distinguished picture book for children. This activity book is based on the idea that connections with art teachers are a natural result of a focus on Caldecott Award literature, and it offers opportunities for students to try different illustrating techniques as they explore line, color, tone, and balance in art. The book shows teachers how to use Caldecott Award stories as springboards for introducing units of studies. Collaborations between classroom teachers and library media specialists facilitate implementation of the activities described in the book. The "Engage, Elaborate, Explore, Connect" lesson plan format is the organizing structure for the story units in the book; this format integrates best-practice principles, a discovery approach to learning, multiple intelligences theory and practice, and diversity and flexibility in teaching. Story units in the book are based on the following children's books: (1) "Arrow to the Sun"; (2) "The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses"; (3) "The Glorious Flight: Across the Channel with Louis Bleriot"; (4) "Grandfather's Journey"; (5) "Hey, Al"; (6) "Jumanji"; (7) "The Little House"; (8) "May I Bring a Friend?"; (9) "Nine Days to Christmas"; (10) "Officer Buckle and Gloria"; (11) "Ox-Cart Man"; and (12) "Where the Wild Things Are." A final activity unit is titled "Introducing the Caldecott Award: Randolph Caldecott." (BT)
