After a foreword and a summary of the Colorado Basic Literacy Act, the first section of the book, Knowing Students and Individuals, discusses building a body of evidence, literacy continuum, running records, determining patterns of strengths and needs, when children do not progress in reading, a few "best ways" to prepare for the CSAP (Colorado Student Assessment Program), assessing special education students, and mapping literacy learning. The second section, Responding to Children's Needs--Teaching and Learning Strategies, addresses fostering the disposition to understand, the geography of strategy instruction, connecting reading and writing learning, cultivating independence in growing readers, using background knowledge, asking questions, determining importance, synthesizing, visualizing and sensing, phonological awareness, fluency, vocabulary, word learning strategies, guided reading, strategies for teaching text structures, kindergarten readers and writers, support for special education students and teachers, library resources, challenges in building and using bodies of evidence, and blessings, promises, and purposes for building and using bodies of evidence. An appendix provides forms for body of evidence data analysis and synthesis, individual reading assessment analysis tools, advice on whether to take an oral reading sample, and talking about student work.
