This book responds to these needs in a systematic and scientific manner by describing methods of translating market demands into defined sets of capabilities to serve as parameters for formal education of information professionals. It also provides a research framework for differentiating between undergraduate and graduate levels for developing educational models. Serious disparities in coverage and treatment of information education in different parts of the world are noted and analyzed using a global view. Chapter 1, "The Information Scene and the Professional: Trends and Directions," develops a framework for conceiving employer perceptions about the preparation of future professionals. The pertinent dimensions of these perceptions are deficiencies among entry-level professionals, trends in the information market, and strategies for developing the needed capabilities. Chapter 2, "Preparation of Information Professionals: A Competency Approach," and chapter 3, "Competency Definition and Validation: Design and Conduct," review employer perceptions about the ways future professionals need to be prepared and present a model for competency definition and validation. Sets of knowledge and skills for future information professionals in a variety of operational and institutional settings are then identified. Chapter 4, "Competencies of Library and Information Professionals: A Functional Approach," provides conceptual framework and competency statements for the operational settings of foundation, cataloging, access, information service, collection development and serials control operations. Other chapters include: (5) "Competencies of Academic Library Professionals: An Institutional Perspective"; (6) "Competencies of Public Library Professionals: An Institutional Perspective"; (7) "Competencies of Special Library Professionals: An Institutional Perspective"; (8) "Graduate and Undergraduate Programs of Library and Information Education: Differentials for Competency-Based Curricula"; and (9) "Preparation of Information Professionals: Strategies and Directions". Includes a bibliography and an index. (Contains 176 references.) (AEF) |
