contents Best Value: Libraries. Bundy, Alan Foreign Countries Library Services Library Statistics Measurement Techniques Performance This paper provides an overview of library statistics as they relate to the value of library services. The first section reviews the Australian national think tank on library statistics, held in 1990. The second section examines the overall state of library statistics in Australia, focusing on deficiencies related to the lack of a central collection and/or repository of current statistics and the lack of nationally agreed performance measures for libraries. The third section considers how well library statistics have been used for demonstration of libraries as best value investments by society, educational institutions, governments, and businesses. The fourth section specifies areas requiring attention if libraries are to reinforce their claims on better funding and support in the 21st century. (MES)
