Weissman, Annie Childrens Literature Elementary Education Language Arts Learning Activities Lesson Plans Reader Response Reading Instruction Story Reading Writing Instruction This book's purpose is to assist school library media specialists in incorporating specific learning objectives into a storytime format, thus extending the storytime experience into standards-based reading and writing lessons. The book is intended for veteran and beginning school library media specialists and teachers who collaborate with them. Designed primarily for grades K-6, the lessons in the book can be adapted for middle school students by adding age-appropriate literature, especially short stories. Specific content areas and lesson plans are included in the book and cover literary elements, Caldecott books, folk tales, genres, and nonfiction. The book features strategies like pair share, Big Books, reader's theater, puppet shows, and choral responses that encourage all students to participate and respond in storytime reading lessons--brainstorming, composing, and publishing strategies encourage participation in storytime writing lessons. Lesson plans and examples in the book help with the incorporation of the national language arts standards, those covered by standardized tests and the implementation of the "Information Power II" standards. (Contains a 35-item bibliography of professional works cited.) (NKA)
