The first chapter provides a historical overview of information services, developments in information technology, end users, and the Internet, as well as a discussion of the library response to these developments. The second chapter discusses metadata, including contents and containers, the role of metadata, cataloging the World Wide Web, the Dublin Core, markup languages, and examples of current bibliographic metadata projects. The third chapter addresses classification, including the Dewey Decimal, Library of Congress, and Universal Decimal Classifications on the Web, other library classification schemes, purpose-specific classification schemes, and the future of classification. The fourth chapter covers controlled vocabularies, including controlled vocabulary applications and concerns about controlled vocabularies. The fifth section examines search engines, including the current situation, studying search engines, trends, and search tips. The sixth section considers future developments, including machine-aided indexing and automated text processing. (Each chapter contains references. The book has author and subject indexes.) (MES) |
