contents UA Key Student Outcomes Indicators: A Comparative Analysis of Alumni Survey Responses by Survey Year Cohort & College, 1997-2000. Ducharme, Sophie Ariane Stratton, Richard W. Academic Advising Alumni Graduate Surveys Higher Education Job Placement Research Methodology Satisfaction Student Attitudes Student Financial Aid This report combines the results of the 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2000 administrations of the University of Akron (UA) Alumni Survey. During each survey, a questionnaire with more than 100 items was mailed to each undergraduate alumnus 1 year and 6 years after his or her graduation. As a result, this survey combines responses of the classes of 1991 through 1999, with the exception of the class of 1995. Responses for the 4 surveys ranged from a high of 1,048 for the 1999 survey to a low of 839 for the 1998 survey. Respondents rated three areas relatively highly: library facilities, major field of study, and the overall value of the UA education. The surveys reveal three areas that present a challenge for the university: placement services, University College advising, and financial aid. The improvement reported by alumni for placement services was the most dramatic noted in the surveys, although concerns remained. Average ratings for items related to University College advising were among the lowest in the surveys, with respondents rating the overall quality as only slightly better than fair. Results for the area of financial aid were mixed, with the overall quality rated as better than fair. Six items addressed respondents' perceptions of employees' concern for students, and these were rated lower than the overall score for student satisfaction. Recommendations are made for the improvement of the survey process, with redesign of the survey and a re-evaluation of the population surveyed. Appendixes contain results tables, a glossary, and the questionnaire. (Contains 17 tables and 39 figures.) (SLD)
