contents The Public Library's Role in the Danish Information Society: Demand for New Competencies? Wohnert, Bodil Computer Mediated Communication Electronic Libraries Foreign Countries Legislation Library Role Library Services Public Libraries Reference Services World Wide Web A new Danish act regarding library service has initiated several projects in order to promote libraries and to provide library staff experience in using the Internet to communicate with end users. Most public Danish information is found on official World Wide Web sites, and there is a tendency to publish online versions instead of printed versions. This is a challenge to reference librarians. In March 2001, the IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions) Interest Group on Reference Work arranged a conference on the future of reference work when virtual tools take over. In Denmark it is expected that the public library will continue to be a local center for culture and knowledge where people also get together, but there is no doubt that the virtual library will be a matter especially for reference work.
