First, standards of privacy protection were identified. These standards were culled from the privacy and confidentiality policies of the American Library Association, the Federal Trade Commission's online privacy reports, the guidelines of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, and the writings of particular information professionals. Then, these standards were used to identify the privacy issues raised by various information seeking processes, e.g., cookies, clickstream and log files, e-mail, interlibrary loans, and searches. With the issues identified, the standards of privacy protection were used to make recommendations for libraries to ensure that the privacy of library users is adequately protected. The recommendations were used to construct a model privacy statement for library Web sites. Appendices include the model policy, the HTML source of the model policy, and the HTML source of the policy annotation. (Contains 18 references.) (Author/MES) |
