  • Planning for Library Services to People with Disabilities. ASCLA Changing Horizons Series. Rubin, Rhea Joyce Access to Information Bibliographies Disabilities Interpersonal Communication Library Planning Library Services Resource Materials User Needs (Information) Users (Information) This book presents a planning process to ensure that libraries consider all of the issues necessary to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, designed to work in conjunction with an already existing library plan. Libraries that complete this process will: ensure that all parts of the larger plan are inclusive; develop objectives and activities of special interest to people with disabilities; guarantee that library services are available on an equal basis to all members of the community; attract people with disabilities to use the library; and position the library as an information access point for people with disabilities, their relatives, and their service providers. The ten points of the plan are: (1) gather information; (2) convene a planning committee; (3) identify issues; (4) analyze the library's current plan; (5) draft goals and objectives; (6) determine available resources; (7) finalize goals and objectives; (8) draft the plan; (9) finalize the plan; and (10) evaluate the plan. Appendices include: bibliographies on planning and on serving library patrons with disabilities; a directory of state offices on disabilities; Internet resources for disability information; federal disability data resources; disabilities statistics and terminology; guidelines on language about disabilities; and tip sheets for communicating with people with disabilities.
