Scheven, Yvette Atlases Cartography Check Lists Foreign Countries Geographic Regions Geography Library Collections Maps The University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) Library, the third largest academic library in the United States, houses one of the best Africana map collections in the United States. This checklist is intended to provide scholars and other map users with sufficient information to locate and examine maps of Africa in the UIUC Library. The checklist may also be useful to map librarians and educators who wish to compare their collections or references with the University's holdings. The cartobibliographical information contained in both the map entry and the bibliography of atlases at the end of the volume should be particularly helpful for cross-referencing. The checklist can also be used by individuals searching for pre-twentieth century maps of other world regions because most of the atlases contain maps of Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The maps are organized geographically following the regional classification used by the Library of Congress. Maps are listed chronologically within each geographical division by date and alphabetically by authority. Following a preface and an introduction, the checklist is divided into five sections: "Organization of Checklist"; "Maps by Region" (Continent; North; Eastern; Southern; Central; West; Islands); "Bibliography of Atlases"; "Bibliography of Geographical Journals"; and "Indexes" (Authority Index; Title Index; Inset Maps).
