contents Cultural Sensitivity in the Implementation of Discipline Policies and Practices. CASE/CCBD Mini-Library Series on Safe, Drug-Free, and Effective Schools. Shingles, Beryl Lopez-Reyna, Norma Administrator Role Behavior Disorders Compliance (Legal) Cultural Differences Discipline Policy Educational Legislation Educational Practices Elementary Secondary Education Federal Legislation Limited English Speaking Policy Formation Prevention This guide is intended to help school administrators to consider the impact of cultural diversity in the development and implementation of school disciplinary policies while complying with the 1997 Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. First it examines how cultural bias, misunderstanding, and insensitivity may impede student and teacher success. Suggestions are offered on ways to compare school data related to student achievement and student disciplinary practices that may indicate significant cultural differences. Next, the guide examines prevention efforts that focus on improvement in student academic achievement, especially student disciplinary practices that employ instructive, as opposed to simple, aversive consequences for undesired behavior. The four main chapters have the following titles: (1) "The Role of Culture in Governing Values, Beliefs, and Behavior"; (2) "Exploring Student Achievement Data, Discipline Data, and Interactions with School Personnel"; (3) "Effective Instruction for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students"; and (4) Developing Effective Disciplinary Practices for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students". (Contains 78 references.) (DB)
