Contained in this English- and Spanish-language program are the following: (1) a bilingual videocassette for use with adults in parent workshops to help them develop their childs listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills; (2) a poster in English and Spanish with information and tips about literacy development for children 3-4 and 4-5 years old; (3) a childrens book with both English and Spanish text offering tips for parents to help develop childrens literacy skills while having fun reading together; (4) parent pages to be sent home with parents or used in parent meetings; and (5) a facilitator guide suggesting ways to use the program materials. The parent pages and facilitator's guide are in both English and Spanish versions. The 22-minute videotape is presented in four parts in which the Sesame Street characters, the Muppets, learn about listening and speaking from the King by singing a song; teachers and parents share different ways to read with children; live-action scenes show children scribbling, drawing, and writing in their own way; and the Muppets visit the library and learn from the librarian. The five parent pages emphasize parents as their child's first teachers, remind parents of the importance of having conversations with their child, present information on reading and writing together, and contain the song lyrics from the videotape. The childrens book includes tips for reading with children and can be used in parent workshops to demonstrate ways to use rhymes and repeated text. The facilitator guide includes suggestions for building partnerships with parents. (KB)
