It is especially useful for professionals in school and public libraries charged with building collections of suitable titles for these students. Completely reorganized and revised since its previous edition (1990), the book is divided into two parts. The first offers a core collection of high/low books (fiction and nonfiction) and related Web sites, organized into broad topical areas that appeal to teens, including: fiction; poetry and drama; folklore and mythology; biography and memoir; careers; celebrities and entertainment; disasters; health and fitness; history; inspirational; love, sex, and relationships; nature and the environment; reference; science, technology, and space exploration; sports and recreation; teen culture and issues; transportation; and the world around us. The second part of the handbook lists popular mainstream young adult books and periodicals with compelling content that can be used to supplement the core collection. Graphic novels have been included in this new selection of titles that will be helpful to English as a Second Language teachers, as well as serving as a readers' advisory and collection development tool. Appendixes provide practical information, including contact information for publishers of high/low titles. Includes author, title, and subject indexes. (MES)
