contents Exploring Writing Workshop in the K-2 Classroom: Discovering Our Voices. Bill Harp Professional Teachers Library Series. Rickards, Debbie Hawes, Shirl Childrens Writing Classroom Techniques Curriculum Enrichment Lesson Plans Primary Education Writing Instruction Writing Skills Writing Strategies Writing Workshops This book is meant as a resource that can be used by experienced writing teachers as a practical reference when planning writing lessons. The book includes a sequence of instruction, lesson ideas, enrichment options, literature and poetry connections, student samples, and all the ready-to-use materials teachers need to implement the "VOICES" enrichment lessons in their classrooms. Rather than offering a prescriptive formula, the book provides information to support and enrich individual writing programs, i.e., explicit examples and direct conversations as illustrations of what occurs in classrooms. It is structured to provide: use of familiar nursery rhymes to teach writing strategies; rhyming couplets with an instructional focus; age-appropriate lessons that build on one another; many examples of teacher talk, modeling, and guided practice; literature and poetry connections; and reproducible materials. Following the Introduction, chapters in the book are: (1) Initiating Writing Workshop with VOICES; (2) Hearing Our VOICES; (3) Vivid Word Choice; (4) Onomatopoeia and Alliteration; (5) Interesting Dialogue and Interjections; (6) Comparison; (7) Expand One Idea; (8) Specificity; and (9) Sustaining VOICES. Appendixes contain: VOICES Board; Traditional Rhymes; Resources for Enrichment Activities. (Contains 15 references.) (NKA)
