contents Web Based Learning Support for Experimental Design in Molecular Biology. Wilmsen, Tinri Bisseling, Ton Hartog, Rob Computer Assisted Instruction Curriculum Development Databases Educational Technology Experiments Higher Education Instructional Design Instructional Materials Molecular Biology World Wide Web An important learning goal of a molecular biology curriculum is a certain proficiency level in experimental design. Currently students are confronted with experimental approaches in textbooks, in lectures and in the laboratory. However, most students do not reach a satisfactory level of competence in the design of experimental approaches. This paper describes the development of a Web-based application that supports the learning of this design skill. The application consists of an activating part and a library part. In the activating part, the student is presented with a biological question that must be solved experimentally. Therefore, the student has to make a set of coherent choices, execute steps in an experiment and interpret the experimental results. Furthermore, a DNA sequence has to be analyzed with Web-based databases. The library consists of learning objects that present essential background information. A test with a small group of students yielded very promising results. (Author)
