- Maryland's Achievements in Public Education, 2011 Public Education State Action State Programs Educational Assessment Educational Indicators Recognition (Achievement) Academic Achievement Achievement Rating This report presents Maryland's achievements in public education for 2011. Maryland's achievements include: (1) Maryland's public schools again ranked #1 in the nation in Education Week's 2011 Quality Counts annual report; (2) Maryland ranked 1st nationwide for a 3rd year in a row in the percentage of public school students scoring 3 or higher on at least one Advanced Placement (AP) exam; (3) Maryland ranked #1 for the second year in a row on Newsweek's America's Top Public High Schools List for the highest percentage of college-level courses being offered by high schools and taken by students; (4) The dropout rate fell to 2.5 percent in 2010, compared to 2.8 percent in 2009; (5) The state's 2010 graduates earned an average composite score of 22.3 on the ACT college admission and placement exam, up from 22.1 last year; (6) Maryland's Class of 2010 graduating seniors were offered $774 million in scholarship funding; (7) Maryland once again ranks 7th in the nation for the number of National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT); (8) The Maryland Principals Academy passed a major milestone in 2010; (9) The Maryland State Department of Education's (MSDE's) Division of Library Development and Services joined Maryland's libraries to celebrate 300,000 questions answered since 2003 by the librarians of Maryland "AskUsNow!"; (10) Maryland's state-funded "prekindergarten program ranks 6th in the nation" for percentage of children enrolled in the program; (11) In 2009, 78 percent of entering kindergartners were evaluated by their teachers as fully ready for school; and (12) Enrollment in Maryland's Project Lead The Way Biomedical Sciences and Engineering increased by 50 percent and 38 percent respectively from 2009 to 2010; (13) Maryland had the 2nd highest increase in the nation in summer nutrition program; and (14) The Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS) helped 1,075 people move from public benefits into employment.
