Nine of these reports have appeared in the past 40 years, the last one, preceding the present 1913 report, presented the statistics of 1908. The earlier reports included the names of all libraries reporting over 300 volumes. In 1983, libraries of less than 1,000 volumes were not included in the published lists, and by 1908 the increase in the number of libraries made it necessary to limit the published list to libraries having 5,000, volumes and over. The special report for 1913 undertakes to present the statistics of libraries having 5,000 volumes and over, arranged in two groups. Contents include: (1) Public and society libraries; (2) Schools and college libraries; (3) Combined statistics; (4) The smaller libraries; (5) Collecting the statistics; (6) Executive officers of State library commissions; and (7) Directors of library schools.
