Bulletin, 1959, No. 17 Educational History Federal Legislation State Legislation Program Descriptions Program Development Program Administration State Programs Library Services Rural Areas Public Libraries Library Development Statewide Planning State Agencies State Policy State Federal Aid Library Education Library Equipment Library Facilities Library Materials Librarians This bulletin outlines the programs submitted by 50 States and Territories for the second year of the Library Services Act. These programs reflect the planning and development which has been taking place across the Nation in the extension and improvement of public library service in rural areas. In the first year, fiscal 1957 (July 1, 1956, through June 30, 1957), 35 States and I Territory submitted States plans and programs. These were summarized in "States Plans Under the Library Services Act." In fiscal 1958, 14 additional States and Territories--Alaska, Florida, Guam, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode island, Utah, Virgin Islands, and Washington--submitted their plans and programs. This bulletin contains in addition to the 1958 programs for the participating States and Territories, outlines on "General Aims and Policies and Methods of Administration" of the 14 State plans which were submitted for the first time in fiscal 1958. Taken together, "State Plans Under the Library Services Act" and this supplement to it, present the basic planning for public library development in rural areas for the States and Territories under the Library Services Act. Appended are: (1) Tables; and (2) Principal Provisions of Public Law 597, 84th Congress, 2nd Session. Individual chapters contain footnotes. (Contains 5 tables.)
