Businesses, governments, universities, scientists, and individuals are creating it at an unprecedented level and pace. Everybody is talking about it. We were just getting used to the concept of gigabytes of data. Then, it changed to petabytes. Now, various technology firms claim that more than an exabyte of data is generated every day. Having to deal with huge amounts of data is not a strange concept for the library world. They were dealing with large datasets from various information resources before Big Data was cool and before data scientists came along. You do not have to be a data scientist to work effectively with large sets of data. Librarians and information professionals can leverage their strength in finding and organizing data and information by using the resources at their disposal to obtain various datasets, build data streams, and provide information and data services to their users. Qin Zhu focuses on information management and development for HP Labs. Here she describes how HP found and shared the organizational knowledge buried in bibliographic records.
