- 24-Hour Academic Libraries: Adjusting to Change Bowman, Adam C. Academic Libraries Scheduling Interviews Librarian Attitudes Library Administration Library Development Staff Utilization Library Research Library Services Performance Factors Access to Information Standards School Security Financial Support User Satisfaction (Information) Organizational Change The purpose of this study was to explore the adaptive measures that academic libraries perform when implementing and operating a 24-hour schedule. Five in-depth interviews were conducted with current managerial-level librarians at 24-hour academic libraries. The exploratory interviews revealed similar measures for security, budgeting, employee duties, building access, information access, and maintaining professional levels of service. Variations involved staffing, revealing differences by employment level, benefits offered, work experience, and workforce. The found similarities provide an important insight into the framework of a 24-hour library operation. Findings were consistent with previous research detailing patron needs, budget concerns, and service response.
