  • Mathematics Teaching as a Narrative Art George, Michael Mathematics Mathematics Instruction Teaching Methods Instructional Innovation Educational Practices Integrated Activities Narration Art Activities Teaching Experience Community Colleges Many students read for pleasure, but how many, stranded in an expansive library, would willingly reach for a mathematics textbook? One reason this scenario is so inconceivable is that mathematics textbooks are organized less as exercises in storytelling and more as how-to manuals. Unfortunately many mathematics teachers instruct accordingly. This author, an instructor of mathematics at a community college, also happens to be a published fiction writer. For a long time, he thought of the two professions as entirely--and curiously--separate endeavors. Over time, however, as his approach to both realms has developed and matured, he has become increasingly respectful of the ways in which mathematics teaching, at its most engaging, relies on a skilled use of the narrative arts. Here he shares his unique insight, and offers ideas for incorporating the tools of the narrative and theatrical arts into meaningful, and engaging mathematics lessons.
