What do they hope to gain from joining them? The Louisiana State University (LSU) chapter of the Society of American Archivists (SAA) conducted a research project that addresses these questions. The SAA-LSU chapter surveyed LIS students and recent graduates from the 61 ALA accredited LIS programs in the United States and Canada. The survey consisted of 31 multiple-choice questions and one open-ended question asking for students' thoughts about why they joined, or didn't join, the student chapter of the professional association of their chosen specialization--archives, public, academic, special, and/or school libraries. It also addressed what they hoped to get from their membership. The goal of this research project was to gain an understanding of how to recruit new students into student chapters as well as how to provide a more enriching experience for those who join.
