- Developing a Curriculum in Intellectual Freedom: What Our Students Need to Know Seroff, Jole Intellectual Freedom Curriculum Development Educational Needs School Libraries Library Services Perspective Taking Access to Information Information Policy Internet Censorship Intellectual Property Copyrights Privacy Values In this article, the author states that school librarians can contribute to an atmosphere that supports intellectual freedom by drawing attention to the subtle messages about community values--messages that are communicated by virtue of what is included or excluded from curricular and co-curricular offerings. The author address issues with internet filtering in schools; use of honor codes that are central to a school's identity; censorship; and intellectual property and fair use. Intellectual freedom is not a value held in a vacuum but, instead, in a particular time and place. Reflecting on instructional programs through the lens of intellectual freedom has reinforced some key tenets, as addressed in this article.
