  • Amazing Race: Finding and Correctly Citing Credible Sources Field-Springer, Kimberly Striley, Katie Margavio Experiential Learning Assignments Citations (References) Information Sources Class Activities Group Activities Campuses Information Seeking Cues Teaching Methods Educational Practices Information Skills The "Amazing Race" activity utilizes experiential learning by encouraging students to venture outside the classroom to collect and cite sources for an upcoming assignment. In the popular TV show, "Amazing Race," teams compete to complete tasks that take them around the world. Similarly, in this classroom activity, groups compete to complete tasks that take them around campus to find source materials. The first group to find all source materials wins. Additionally, the activity forces students to familiarize themselves with campus resources, such as navigating the library database. Therefore, the activity is particularly beneficial for incoming students in introductory courses, often ill-equipped with information about their new surroundings. When the activity is completed, it has been observed that there is an increase in students' confidence in finding, collecting, and evaluating sources. Also observed is that in semesters when students use the "Amazing Race" activity, they make fewer citation mistakes and cite more credible sources than at times when they do not use the activity.
