However, one thing will never change even in these dynamic times; librarians are still the driving force behind strong reading programs and fostering that love of reading. How do librarians create a culture of readers without driving them away? This article shares the perspectives of students who discuss how to create a culture of readers without driving them away. Most students surveyed attribute being a reader to being encouraged by a person, not a program. The students also discuss what "counts" as reading. After hearing the students' perspectives, the author realized that maybe some schools already "have" a reading culture and librarians just have not seen it and should start looking through the lens of a student's perspective more often. Librarians are encouraged to take the opportunity to change how they view reading. |
