Troubleshooting Electronic Libraries Access to Information Handheld Devices Telecommunications Computer Networks Computers Internet Web Browsers For electronic resources and reference librarians, fielding eresource access problems is often a daily task. A library user clicks on a link to an electronic journal article, book, or primary source and is unable to access the full text. Sometimes this problem occurs due to a lapsed subscription, a broken link, or a proxy configuration error. The result is the same: no access and a need for library staff to replicate and troubleshoot the problem. A significant portion of access problems result from off-campus or off-site "remote" user access, frequently because of problems involving OCLC's EZproxy user authentication and authorization solution, which is used by thousands of libraries worldwide. This article examines the full spectrum of troubleshooting tools: smartphones, hotspots, virtual private networks, remote desktop solutions, virtual machines, and EZproxy directives. By closing this gap in the literature, we want to guide librarians toward tools and techniques that efficiently meet their needs for troubleshooting remote access, specifically access via EZproxy, though librarians using Shibboleth or Open Athens may also find this article useful.
