Young Children Developmental Disabilities Beginning Teachers Instructional Materials Childrens Literature Picture Books Emergent Literacy Primary Education Library Materials Classroom Environment Reading Materials Writing Exercises Reading Instruction The purpose of this article is to provide strategies that address three areas (creating a classroom library, incorporating environmental print, establishing writing activities) for beginning teachers for creating literacy-rich environments to support the academic and functional needs of young students with significant developmental disabilities (DD). Literacy-rich environments in early primary grades incorporate strategic creation of classroom libraries, contain environmental print, explore a variety of literature (e.g., storybooks, poems), and provide various literacy activities. In these environments, teachers need to ensure students are able to access materials in meaningful and engaging ways. The evidence-based suggestions provided are applicable to all settings in which students with significant DD may be taught.
