As they progress from pre-K through middle school, students are exposed to social justice literature designed to get them to empathize with others. Having kids connect with characters in a book is just the first step to getting them to care about the way inequality and unfairness plays out in the real world. The school is big into project-based learning (PBL) that encourages students to value and practice kindness. The article discusses student voice and empowerment, culturally relevant teaching, and the importance of seeking community partnerships.
