Unfortunately, this troubling trend seems to be spreading. According to the author, multiple studies have shown that effective school library programs can enhance learner literacy, increase learner test scores, and create more equitable learner outcomes So closing school libraries to deal with low test scores (and other perceived issues) is clearly counter-productive at best. School libraries are just as essential to a healthy campus as providing food service. Many low-income learners have only limited access to accurate information sources. So, as the author states, our children (and classroom teachers) desperately need more highly competent school librarians and media specialists, not fewer. A strong school library program can have a significant positive impact on student learning and test scores. |
