| contents | "Awakening the Mind": The Educational Philosophy of William Godwin Bottoms, Janet Educational Philosophy Teaching Methods Although William Godwin's place in the radical movements of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries is recognized, relatively little attention has been given to his contribution to educational debate and praxis in the same period. Godwin shared with many of his contemporaries ideas drawn from Locke, Hartley and Rousseau, and was involved in discussions on some experimental approaches to schooling. However, his relationship with Wollstonecraft and Coleridge and experience in educating his own family contributed to the development of a philosophy of education which was, in certain ways, distinct from those of his contemporaries, and which can be traced particularly through his essays in "The Enquirer" and the books for children which he wrote or commissioned for his Juvenile Library. In particular, those written under the name Edward Baldwin can be seen as perhaps the first attempt to provide a structured series of books in accordance with what he saw as the primary purpose of education, the cultivation of imagination and 'awakening the mind'. This paper explores what these terms meant to him, relating them to his continuing belief in the importance of education in the cause of the perfectibility not only of the individual but also of community and nation. |
