contents How Do You Manage? Rogers, Michael Purchasing Public Libraries Librarians Library Materials Library Role Public Relations Newspapers How Do You Manage, is a column in Library Journal where librarians send in stories based upon actual events happening in libraries across the United States. This story recounts a public relations situation where a reporter from a local paper interviews by phone, a librarian in charge of audio and video services in a small town library. The following morning the story appeared, claiming that the library was placing its emphasis on buying DVDs over books. The article contained several quotes in which Curto implied that people were more interested in watching movies than reading and by purchasing numerous feature films, including R-rated titles, the library simply was giving the public what it wanted. The librarian thought she was providing basic facts about her area of responsibility and didn't think of informing the director before or after the fact. This article provides 2 analyses of this situation. The director and the board of the library may wish to consider the adoption of a written media relations policy that spells this out and codifies everyone's proper role. By working together, the board and staff can make sure that the true, positive story of the library is known to the public.
