Educational Needs Study Abroad Student Unions Educational Experience Educational Opportunities Educational Objectives College Students Higher Education What makes a college a place that stimulates deep learning about the world, that encourages students to discover and explore their own talents and interests in challenging and creative ways, and that assists them to develop the skills to relate effectively with others in social, occupational, or civic contexts? There are, of course, many characteristics that make colleges and universities vibrant communities for learning. One important attribute of effective campus learning communities is that there is alignment among three components: student learning goals and educational needs (including both goals the institution endorses and those identified by students), the opportunities available to students to achieve these goals, and the expertise held by educators facilitating these opportunities. This article highlights the work of educators who interact with students in a variety of campus settings, occasionally--but not usually--in classroom settings. These educators work with students throughout the campus, whether in the library, offices that encourage and assist students to study abroad, residence halls, student unions, employment or internship offices, and in campus health clinics. |
