- Databases for K-8 Students Young, Terrence E., Jr. Elementary School Students Databases Proofreading Spelling Computers Online Searching Electronic Journals Today's elementary school students have been exposed to computers since birth, so it is not surprising that they are so proficient at using them. As a result, they are ready to search databases that include topics and information appropriate for their age level. Subscription databases are digital copies of magazines, newspapers, journals, pamphlets, and more. Many databases require reading and operational skills that are often beyond the abilities of young students. Although they may be intrigued by the topic of a database, they may not be able to formulate and input the questions they would like answered. Databases that provide a graphical interface for the youngest students are generally the most understandable for these users. Younger students often can't narrow their topic to a single word or phrase, or, if they can, may have trouble spelling it. They rely on visual memory to access words remembered from print experiences. Surprisingly few subscription databases have tackled the problem of misspellings and typographical errors effectively. This article provides a list of features that should be included in databases for elementary grade students.
