| contents | You Go, Girl! Shape Up, Slim Down, Shatter the Stereotype Belben, Cathy Librarians School Libraries Stereotypes Role Models Physical Fitness As a profession librarians are stereotyped as frequently as engineers and accountants--if not more so. They are bifocal-wearing bunheads, collectors of cardigan sweaters, middle-aged women in polyester suits, Naturalizer shoes, and baggy stockings. Besides being fashion disasters, librarians are generally thought of as being exceptionally unsexy, what with their obsessive orderliness and fanatical fact gathering. They are smart, nerdy, no nonsensey, and, of course, bookish. There are librarians out there crankily insisting that these stereotypes are degrading and detrimental to the profession. The author of this article is personally grateful for these misconceptions. Because without them, she would not have nearly as much fun. This article describes how Cathy Belben whipped herself into shape, and pushed aside the typical librarian stereotype. |
