Often parents lack sufficient knowledge of the research process to be able to effectively help their children. Moreover, teachers expect parents to monitor student homework but rarely give parents information about the purpose of the homework or how best to help their children. Many parents are unfamiliar with what is expected of student work and this inevitably leads to anxiety for both parents and children. This article describes how assessment rubrics are helping parents and students understand where the marked work fits on a continuum, why teachers and librarians assign the letter grades they do and what students must do to achieve a top-level mark. A list of rubrics for grades 5, 6, and 7 are provided, along contact information on how to obtain those rubrics.
