- Bring Back the Poetry Miguez, Betsy Bryan Grade 3 Reading Centers Poetry Elementary School Teachers Librarians Teaching Methods Teacher Attitudes Class Activities Educators agree that the best way to instill poetry appreciation in elementary students is to use poetry in the classroom every day, while some teachers cheerfully use poetry daily, others ignore it because of their own negative attitudes toward poetry or because of a lack of time due to pressures of preparing for standardized testing. Teacher-Librarians can fill the gap by sharing the joy of poetry with all students, and having a file of favorite poems helps. Poems can be displayed in the library resource center, incorporated into lessons developed with teachers, or shared during impromptu poetry breaks. This article describes a two-session poetry unit that involves poetry reading centers, a poetry listening center, a video, and reader's theatre. The unit is the result of collaborative planning between the teacher-librarian and the third grade teachers at Broadmoor Elementary School in Lafayette, LA.
