Latrobe, Kathy Publishing Industry Childrens Literature Library Materials Librarians Library Role Social Problems Recently, an article, "Is Publishing Going to the Dogs?" (Silvey 2004, 36), focused on the children's book publishing industry and the inevitable conflicts among social issues, art forms, and the world of commerce. That title, featuring an illustrated dog drooling over the book in its teeth, echoes the concerns and fears expressed in the commentaries that have documented the countless mergers, acquisitions, and takeovers within the book publishing industry during the last quarter century and that have outlined the vast dimensions of global media corporations. This article discusses some of the concerns about the impact of media concentration on library collections, readers, authors, and illustrators. (Contains 1 table.)
