Fiction Grandparents Family Relationship Children Childrens Literature Picture Books Intermediate Grades Grandparents play an integral role in a child's life. In recent years these functions have been expanded due to longer life spans, access to better health care, and changing family dynamics. President Jimmy Carter designated Sunday, September 9th, 1979, as the first formal Grandparents Day, and the first Sunday following Labor Day in each succeeding year as National Grandparents Day. The campaign for this day began in 1973 in West Virginia and was spearheaded by Marian McQuade, a mother of fifteen children. The campaign garnered a lot of local and national attention before the proclamation was passed. This article describes some books and resources for lesson plans to celebrate this occasion.
