- Yes You Can! Meeting the Challenge of Math and Science Sprung, Barbara Mathematics Instruction Science Instruction Creative Teaching Class Activities Early Childhood Education Teaching Methods Classroom Environment Learning Centers (Classroom) Manipulative Materials Playground Activities Art Activities Family School Relationship This article beings with two anecdotes that demonstrate that math and science are everywhere in a teacher's classroom. The challenge is to take these wonderful "teachable moments" that happen all the time and intentionally incorporate them into the curriculum. Early childhood teachers need to learn to seize these teaching and learning opportunities, and to let children know that their teachers value their discoveries and ideas by sharing them with other children and adults in the classroom. Sometimes the lessons might be for an individual child or a small group, and other times the moment may turn into a lesson or book that can benefit the entire class! This article presents numerous suggested ideas and activities for working with early childhood students. It is divided into the following sections: Math and Science around the Room; Block Area Math; Dramatic-Play Area; Outdoor Area; How Science Is Everywhere; Cooking up Some Learning; Art Area; Library Links; Quick and Easy Learning Center Ideas; and Home-School Connection. A list of resources for adults; and a list of books for children conclude the article. [Article titles varies: "Meeting the Challenge of Teaching Science and Math."]
