| contents | Make Your Load Lighter with STARS Braxton, Barbara School Libraries Elementary Schools Elementary School Students Library Services Student Volunteers Service Learning The Student Teaching and Research Services (STARS) program that is in place in a particular elementary school has proven very successful, not only in improving the services that are offered, but also in helping its participants to build their self-esteem. Those who seek a safe haven in the library during breaks make such a significant and visible contribution that their confidence grows, they see themselves in a more positive light, and their relationships with their peers improve. More often than not, a student needing help will seek out a STAR participant rather than an adult. The program consists of five modules--The Physical Environment; Circulation; Locating Resources; Promotion; and Personal Development--and there are three levels within each module: Protostar, Star, and Superstar. The STARS program has been very successful in this school, and even though there are a number of community service programs that students can be involved in, each year there are many applications to be a STARS participant. Students see the library as theirs and are very particular about how it is used. The staff members just thank their lucky stars! |
