- Passport to Reading/Passeport a la Lecture Lawrence, Greg Student Projects Books Middle School Students School Libraries Reading Programs Four years ago, teacher staffing at the author's grade 6-8 middle school was reorganized so that the library could be open and staffed with a teacher-librarian for the entire school day. However, this required that the library program be part of the delivery of preparation time for the staff with some classes time-tabled with one 50-minute period per week in the library. Something more than a short book talk and book exchange was in order. Out of this need to provide a library program that supports literacy and the curriculum, and to help students in skill development for research, personal reading, and effective book selection, a project requiring each student to plan, write, edit, and publish a book was initiated. After a contest to come up with a name that is easily identifiable in French and English, Passport to Reading/Passeport a la Lecture was born. The author provides more discussion on this reading program in this article.
