The author of this article relates the story of how, with the encouragement of her principal, and the help of a children's librarian at the public library, the community coordinator at a nearby Barnes and Noble, and a children's book buyer at a local independent book store, a "reading debut" program was created. The goal of this program was to make children's entrance into the world of reading a magical experience--something first graders would never forget. Initially these programs were set up in three places, lasted about 75 minutes, and featured approximately seven readers. Local authors were invited to take part, and parents were encouraged to participate. |
