  • All (Librarian) Hands on Deck: Librarians Lead the Way on the Long Journey to Recovery and Rebuilding Block, Marylaine Kim, Ann Librarians Libraries Library Services Library Materials Library Equipment Library Facilities Crisis Management Natural Disasters Weather Helping Relationship Financial Support Library Associations This article describes how librarians stepped up to the plate to rescue materials and meet the needs of thousands of uprooted evacuees from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, employing their unique skills and resources to put forth a humane and herculean effort. In Houston and Austin, Texas; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Memphis; Fayetteville, Arkansas; and many other cities, librarians extended hours to provide both Internet workstations and staff to help people look for missing relatives, find jobs and housing, and fill out FEMA applications. Librarians relocated computers and books to shelters, where they also gave story hours and listened to evacuees' dramatic accounts. They put up web pages linking users with every kind of service they would need: schools, food, housing, job listings, and more. Their hard work and perseverance provided valuable services in this time of crisis.
